Residents in North Hertfordshire are being encouraged to sign up to North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) new chargeable garden waste service, which starts in May.

Residents will shortly receive a letter detailing how to sign up to the new service.

Chairman's Volunteer Achievement Awards - Winners Announced

The winners of this year’s Chairman’s Volunteer Achievement Awards were revealed at a celebratory reception at Wymondley Priory Barns on Friday 2 February 2018.

The awards celebrate people in North Hertfordshire who volunteer and ‘go the extra mile’ to make a real difference in their local community. Organised by North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC), the awards were sponsored by Willmott Dixon, with The Comet as media partner. 

Councillors to consider potential scheme to regenerate Hitchin’s Churchgate Centre

A new potential joint venture opportunity for the regeneration of the Churchgate Centre in Hitchin will be discussed at a meeting of North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Full Council on 8 February.

The potential joint venture between the Council and Shearer Property Group would see a ‘face-lift’ of the existing shopping centre, improving the quality of the units available and in turn making them more attractive to retailers. The scheme would also see improved public open space and investment in Hitchin’s historic market.

North Hertfordshire Museum and Hitchin Town Hall Update: Acquisition of 14/15 Brand Street

At a meeting of NHDC’s Cabinet last night (23) Councillors considered a report on the ongoing discussions around the acquisition of 14 and 15 Brand Street from Hitchin Town Hall Ltd (HTHL). At the meeting, Cabinet agreed to progress the alternative options available to enable the museum to open.

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Fraudster Convicted

A Letchworth woman has been prosecuted after pleading guilty to four charges relating to fraudulent claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reductions totalling almost £17,000 between 2011 & 2015.

Roman artefacts secured for North Hertfordshire Museum

North Hertfordshire Museum is celebrating after being awarded grant funding to keep locally discovered Roman treasures in the district.

The artefacts which include Egyptian patterned glass bowls dating back to AD200, Roman jugs, cups, plates and an iron lamp, have been classed as the third most significant discovery of its kind in recent years.

NHDC’s public toilets win ‘Loo of the Year Awards’

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) has cleaned up at the ‘Loo of the Year Awards’ by receiving national recognition for all three of its public conveniences.

Toilets at Howard Park Gardens in Letchworth, Fish Hill in Royston and The Arcade in Hitchin were each awarded platinum certificates for their high standard of maintenance and cleanliness.

Look out for fraudulent email claiming to be from NHDC

Several residents have informed us about an email they have received purporting to come from NHDC, regarding the sale of a property with a 'Memorandum of Sale' document attached.

The message states that a property has been sold subject to contract, and that "a copy of the Memorandum of Sale, together with a copy of the sales particulars" is attached to the email. It goes on to ask the recipient to "arrange for a Draft Contract to be sent to the buyer's solicitors." The message signs off with "Yours sincerely, Customer Service, North Hertfordshire District Council."

Hertfordshire’s Year of Physical Activity springs into action

A campaign is launching on 01 January 2018 to encourage people across Hertfordshire to become more active. Hertfordshire’s Year of Physical Activity 2018 (Herts YOPA) aims to inspire residents, both young and old, to become more active and get involved in sports and physical activities.

A new theme will launch each month to reach out to and involve different sectors of society in physical activities. Themes will include:

  • New year, new you
  • Workplace wellbeing

  • Women and girls
